65-Year Member, John Payne Rests From His Labors


Vinton Lodge #131 has lost Brother John Payne, a 65-year member of the Lodge.

Brethren, we are saddened by the loss of our Brother John Payne, a 65 year Mason. Brother Payne passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2016 following a long illness.

John Aaron Payne, 87, Vinton, Ohio, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2016 at Holzer Medical Center, Gallipolis, Ohio following a long illness. He was born February 18, 1928 in Roane County, West Virginia to the late E. C. and Ella Halbert Payne. He was a 65 year member of Vinton Masonic Lodge #131, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, and a member of Vinton Eastern Star CHapter #375.

John married Opal Virginia Stewart May 14, 1950 at the Vinton Baptist Church and she survives with two daughters:  Jerri (David) Samples, Jackson, Ohio and Kathy (Rodney) Alderman, Vinton, Ohio; and a son, Johnny (Denise) Payne, Vinton, Ohio; grandchildren: Alison (Chris) Jones, Michael (Kristi) Samples, John (Stephanie) Samples, Jill (Aaron) Fuss, Chris (Luciana) Alderman, Ryan (Michelle) Alderman, Kari (Andy) Wingerter, Craig (Angie) Payne, Scott (Jamie) Payne and Beth (Joey) Graham;  great-grandchildren:  Talyn, Hadley, Kade, Isaac, Amelia, Reid, Aftyn, Ethan, Rogan, Briggs, Ella, Jensen, Truman, Emma, Jane, Corbin, Theodore, Lucas, and Eli;  sisters:  Louise Boland, Fairfield, California and Ellen Kirk, Frankfort, Ohio; brothers: Joseph Payne, Callao,  Virginia and David (Annalee) Payne, Ukiah, California and sister-in-law, Phyllis Stewart, Gallipolis, Ohio.  The family extends special thanks to caregivers:  Sharon Stewart, Judy Cossin and Lori Petty.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by sisters Marie Budd and Alice Thompson.

Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Monday, January 25, 2016 at Vinton Baptist Church with Reverend Heath Jenkins and Reverend Jon Mollohan officiating.  Burial will follow in Vinton Memorial Park.  Friends may call at the church Sunday from 3:00-7:00 PM.  Masonic services will be conducted by Vinton F & AM Lodge 131 at 6:45 PM Sunday at the church.
